We Solve Murders, by Richard Osman
Osman is back with a new series— after the success of the Thursday Murder Club series (https://www.margueritereads.com/home/the-thursday-murder-club-mysteries-by-richard-osman?rq=thursday) , he has created a new cast of characters to solve murders. Osman reassures us that we will meet the Thursday group in a new mystery in 2025, but until then, we have this new group to enjoy.
Amy Wheeler is a body guard employed by the Maximum Impact Security Agency, a gal who lives for the adrenaline rush of responding to danger and handling anything that arises with intelligence and aggression. Her husband Adam works in commodities trading, a safe life, but also requiring worldwide travel. They know that they only want to be with each other; whenever they decide it is time to settle down, it will be together. Adam’s father is Steve, a retired cop who recently lost his beloved wife Debbie. His days are passed in a quiet English town, the weekly highlight a trivia night at the local pub. When Amy is working to guard an aged, hugely famous bestselling author of murder mysteries in South Carolina, Rosie D’Antonio, Amy learns that someone is framing her for a series of three murders of Instagram influencers, and now is trying to kill her. Amy calls the only person she trusts to help her solve these murders and exonerate herself, her father-in-law, Steve. Thus begins a worldwide romp via Rosie’s personal jet, to stay alive, and collect clues to find the mysterious Francois Loubet and Joe Blow, pseudonyms for the people plotting these murders, but to what end?
The humor and pacing is similar to Thursday Murder Club, a droll style with sudden twists and revelations that thrill and delight. The chapters are even shorter in this book, often 2-3 pages long, which makes for a quick paced page turner. As in previous books, Osman’s characters have specific details that make them completely believable, and often very endearing and likeable, or completely ridiculous. You will especially enjoy Max Highfield and Rosie D’Antonio. Max is a very successful action movie actor, who fancies himself a great actor of wonderous depth, a renaissance man of culture, who is actually pure buffoonery. Rosie is 80 years old, wears skin-tight body suits, and lives on alcohol and sex. She is endlessly restless, looking for the next amusing lay, utterly fearless, knowing if her end is near she will have no regrets. She brings much of the humor to the story, as well as clever turns to avoid the assassin’s pursuit.
Osman promises that we will meet Steve, Amy, and Rosie again in a future book. I am eager to read about the next murder adventure with Joyce, Elizabeth, Ibrahim, and Ron, but I have room in my heart for the new We Solve Murders gang. I urge you to give them a try.
